Depression

What is depression?

It's only human to feel 'low' or 'fed up' or despondent from time to time. We may be feeling frustrated in our jobs; we may be arguing with our partner; we may simply have had a bad day. Whatever the trigger, these very common feelings usually pass. Clinical depression is different. When people are depressed, they experience feelings of sadness, weariness, and very often, despair, that can persist for weeks, months or sometimes years. Many people become isolated and withdrawn, losing interest in their lives and finding it impossible to take pleasure in anything. Some people feel so despairing they have suicidal thoughts.

At Face to Face Therapia we know depression can feel overwhelming, as if there's ‘no way out’. Fortunately, depression is treatable. If you are struggling to cope, please contact us. We can talk through your symptoms and get you the right help.

Do I have depression?

Depression can take many forms. It can be triggered by upsetting events such as a break-up, or a bereavement, but sometimes there's no obvious cause. Below are some very common symptoms of depression.

  • Feeling empty and worthless
  • Feeling hopeless and 'beyond help'
  • Feeling tired all the time, struggling to get out of bed
  • Struggling to concentrate or make decisions
  • Never laughing or having feelings of joy
  • Feeling irritable and on edge
  • Feeling anxious, worrying all the time about different things
  • Having urges to ‘hurt’ or punish yourself
  • Experiencing suicidal thoughts
  • Having unexplained aches and pains
  • Eating too much or too little

    How do we treat depression?

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is one of the most effective ways of treating depression. It involves meeting regularly with a psychotherapist to talk through your feelings. When we are able to make sense of our thoughts and emotions, we become free to change them. Your counsellor is there to support you, and to help you unravel the reasons for your distress. They can work with you in person, or online. For more information, please visit our one to one therapy page.
