Kink, Fetish & BDSM issues

What do we mean by Kink, Fetish & BDSM issues?

" I have no objection to anyone's sex life as long as they don't practice it in the street and frighten the horses." This typically humorous quotation from the great writer and diarist Oscar Wilde has a serious message underneath. It's a plea for sexual tolerance that's as relevant now as it was when Wilde wrote it in the late 19th century.

At Face to Face Therapia we embrace sexual diversity within consensual relationships. We know that many people enjoy BDSM (bondage and discipline, domination and submission, sadism and masochism); others have sexual fetishes or simply identify as 'kinky'.

Having less conventional sexual preferences isn't always easy. Couples or individuals may have relationship difficulties tied to their sexual choices. They may have encountered prejudice. They may even feel ashamed of their sexual preferences.

If you're struggling with issues related to your sexual preferences, please get in touch. We can talk through the problem and get you the right help.

What kinds of problems can we help with?

Common issues we help individuals and couples with at our centre include:

  • relationship difficulties, including power struggles in BDSM relationships. Who rules outside the bedroom?
  • loss of personal identity outside the world of BDSM
  • internal confusion over one's sexual preferences
  • feelings of guilt and shame
  • fear of revealing one's sexual preferences to others
  • trauma caused by non-consensual sexual encounters
  • conflict between partners when one identifies as 'kinky', the other as 'vanilla'

How do we treat these issues?

Many of our clients benefit from the support, understanding and insights gained during a course of one to one therapy . In cases of trauma caused by abuse or other harrowing experiences, a pioneering technique called EMDR can be very effective. Many people also find group therapy helpful. If you're experiencing relationship difficulties, you may like to consider couples therapy or sex therapy .

We are all different. Some people are most suited to one approach, others benefit from a combination of therapies. If you came to our centre we'd discuss your difficulties and together, decide on the talking treatment that's best for you.
